Ideas...

Just a few fun projects I've whipped up lately...nothing fancy.

Gave this to my sisters for Christmas. Yep, made 8 of them (7 daughters, 1 mom) - it took a little while.

And this for a good friends who's father passed away. I never know what do give or say when someone passes away, but I really liked this. The scalloped board can be found on etsy HERE

Christmas Advent

I've been on the lookout for a good advent. I wanted one that focused on Jesus Christ. I sort of combined 2 ideas. As we've all seen, the felt envelopes numbered for the advent. I hung mine on a ribbon with clothespins because frankly, I ran out of time to sew cute buttons on the back. :)

Then, I found this advent puzzle idea. I am LDS, and it was used in The Friend a few years back. Here it is all ready for you to print! I inserted 1 little scrpiture/activity, and 1 puzzle piece inside each felt envelope.

The kids love it!!!!

Christmas Decorations

I always love to see how others decorate their home...so I'm posting a few of my decorations. Hopefully we can all inspire eachother!

Halloween Decorations

Candy Corns: So fun for the kids. Just small pieces of wood, in a triangle shape, painted to look like a candy corn. We just sprinkle them around the tables here and there.

Sign and Banner: My banner was way simple, just felt with the ricrac. Pinking sheared the felt, sewed them together, wala. "happy haunting" sign: Vinyl characters, but to add a touch of color, I used my 'chalks' for card making. It worked really well! I just chalked their clothes, or whatever areas I wanted some color. I then just did a coat of shellac over the top.

Caution Sign: Gathered old barnwood. Stenciled on my sayings with paint. Screwed the barnwood into...more barnwood, put a stake on the bottom so I can pound it in the ground near my front door.

Spider: Vinyl spider. I found the clipart online google search. I have young kids, so I put it beneath my lightswitches. They think it's kind of fun to see a playful spider saying "boo" for a few weeks...

Halloween Party

Just a few game ideas I collected the past few years, while being in the school during the class party's. I went around and peeked at the other games other mom's came up with...

Blow the Ghost
Make a ghost by covering a cotton ball with a tissue and tied with a piece of thread around it’s neck. Tape a one inch piece of straw to the top of the ghost’s head. Make two of these so you have two teams playing against each other in a relay. Thread a very long string through the straw. Attach each end of the string to a chair. Pull the chairs apart until the string is tight. Divide class into two teams. Each team member will get on their knees and with a 3 inch piece of straw blow the ghost to the other side. Next team member will blow the ghost back until all members have had a turn.

Witch’s Stew
You will need at least one cut out shape for each member on each team and two plastic cauldrons. I used our school die-cut machine and made spiders, black cats, owls and frogs. Divide the class into two teams. Each member needs a 3 inch piece of straw. Give each team a pile of shapes (ingredients for the stew). One at a time a team member, using a 3 inch piece of straw, will suck up a shape, keeping it on the straw, walk quickly to the other side of the room and drop the shape in a black cauldron. Once the shape is in the cauldron the next team member can go. First team to have all members take a turn wins.

Sweeping witches
Each team needs a witch’s hat, a broom, and a large sheet of newspaper crumpled in a ball. Space three or so chairs apart in a line for each team. Each member will have to sweep the crumpled ball of newspaper in and out through the chairs while wearing their witch’s hat. They go down and back and then give the hat and broom to next person until all members have gone.

Zonk:
Card with 9 halloween pictures. Place 1 candy (skittles, smarties, etc) on each square/character. Have 1 child leave the area. The remaining children pick which picture is "it" and then we invite the 1 child back. He begins picking candies off the paper, 1 at a time. When he picks the candy off the one picture we picked as a group we yell, 'ZONK!' (or whatever you want to say). For Christmas we call it 'don't eat rudolph', also known as 'don't eat pete', etc. Repeat until all the kids get a turn.

My card:

The And Game:
It's a fun play on words. Sit in a circle, and make sure you go in 1 direction so kids will know who's next. For example, I would say, "bread AND" and the person to my right says "butter". Words that go together. Its funny to hear what they come up with. Make it a halloween theme. Examples: "ghost AND boo", "witch AND broom", etc.

Red Hots:
Relay Race with red hots (or candycorns). Seperate into groups for relay teams. Each child gets a plastic spoon to place in their mouth. They have to run/walk fast with the red hot on the spoon, and pass it to the next player, etc etc.

Baby Girl Gift

I don't have girls. So perhaps I'm the only one who doesn't know how to make these. I recently followed this tutorial. I must say, some darling headbands were created! It was just as easy as she said it would be. :)
tutorial here:

http://elizabethkartchner.blogspot.com/2008/08/ive-gotten-quite-few-emails-about.html

All you need:

1. knee highs (50cents a pair at the drug store)
2. a glue gun
3. a little sewing.
4. embellishments, felt, ribbon, etc.
I was making headbands for a newborn head, so I opted to cut out small felt flowers instead of the big silk flowers. But, either work!

I also made 1 headband with the ribbon around the sewing area for interchangable clippies...

Boys Bedroom

I had some requests to see the rest of the room where my pirate curtains are. Took me a little while to clean it up to be worthy of a picture! :)

My boys have the best daddy. He had in his mind that he wanted to build them a boat bed. So, he did. (Sorry, no tutorial for the bed!) The sails on the boat really go up and down. There is a flag hoist, so my boys make flags now and again to hoist at bedtime. We of course have buried treasure maps, and plastic bottles to throw overboard with maps inside. Tons of pirate hats, swords, hand hooks, eye patches, buried treasure, etc.

The rest of their room is obviously centered around a boating theme. I didn't want to do pirates, because I wanted it to be a happy place (my youngest is still young enough to be scared of things).

Have any awesome ideas to add to this room? I was going to do a banner with all different marine flags...but haven't gotten around to that one yet. I would love to hear your ideas!

The Flour Game

My sister in law suggested this game a few months ago. We just got around to trying it. It was so fun!

THE FLOUR GAME:

1. Fill a regular sized bowl with flour.
2. Place a plate on top of bowl and flip bowl over.
3. You now remove the bowl and have a heap of flour, the shape of the bowl.
4. Add a penny on the top of the flour.
5. Take turns carefully cutting away slices of the flour (like you'd cut a pie)
6. Whomever takes the turn that makes the penny fall, looses.

It's just a fun easy game. Is a little messy!!! But, well worth it.

New Baby

I love to give baby gifts. Here is a card I made to go along with a baby gift. Just thought it was a fun quote, and a fun little clothes line...sorry, the little clothes and diaper and moon were in my stash from who knows when, but I'm sure there are plenty of similar items out there to be found.

Pressed Flowers

My garden flowers are getting sparse as summer comes to an end. Last year I pressed some daisy's, and put them in this arrangement. I picked up the old window at a garage sale, painted it and antiqued it the way I wanted...then added two pieces of glass for each panel. I was able to sandwich the flowers in, adding a piece of vellum behind. I also printed my quote on vellum and sandwiched it between the pieces of glass. I know this isn't some new idea...we've all seen these a thousand times, but I always like to see the different ways people create them...

Document your Travels

I LOVE to travel. I love to take pictures. In my office, I made my own "travel" wall. I purchased a shadow box at Michaels, and cheap frames (that I will always be able to find). As we travel, we try to find a keepsake from that location to set in the shadow box, and we add a new picture to our ever growing (I hope) wall.

My sister loves to travel. She's been a lot more places than I. She opted to hang a large map pinpointing all the locations she has been. She then added a few clocks of some of her more "special" places, and a vinyl quote.

Just throwing it out there for others that perhaps love to travel and reminisce about going somewhere again soon!

Birthday Chart

I gave this to my mom (the grandma) last year. It's a fun way to keep track of all the extended family members birthdays. Her home has a lot of wood, so I wanted it to blend with her decor. You could make this really fun and colorful instead.

What you need:
1. Everyone's birthdays.
2. 1 piece of large wood to hang from and put the months on.
3. Many small pieces of wood to put the names on. Mine are 2" wide.
4. Hooks: Find at Home Depot. 5/8" "Hooks & Eyes". Good luck finding anything besides brass. Place a hook on top, and a hook on bottom, that way you can add family members anywhere in the line whenever new members marry in, or are born!
5. Lettering: Of course, I used vinyl again, but you could just handwrite the names.

TIP: While you're making this, make lots of EXTRA small woods. Then, when you need to add someone new, you will have it all ready to go!

TIP 2: You could color coordinate for families. I just did blue for boys, green for girls, but you COULD give each family a different color. In that I have 7 siblings, I opted NOT for this option. :)

Birthday Cake

Inspired by a beautiful cake found at analteredstate.blogspot.com

Hers is a true piece of artwork, mine was cheap, and fun.

IKEA has these fun nesting boxes down in the wrapping paper section. You get 12 circle boxes (all fun colorsand sizes) for $1.50. The minute I saw this cake, I knew why I'd bought those cute little boxes for no reason earlier!

Decorate with any ric-rac, ribbons, felt, or paper you've got on hand. I made the little happy birthday tag...using iron on transfer paper and felt.

So fun to put little presents in the day of the big bash. And, since tomorrow is my birthday and all...(go ahead, wish me happy birthday). :0
